For all those who are curious about how much it costs to travel through Africa, we’ve posted country budgets for all of the countries we visited: South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Victoria Falls, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. Just click on the tab at the top that says “Country Budgets,” and you can explore to your hearts content. For those who just like to know the big number, in our three months in Africa we spent $9,922.31.

  1. That’s quite an absurdly low number. And I was happy with my $50 a day in Budapest number. I’m thinking Prague used to be like that but now its on the traveler’s hot spot list. I think I’ll be spending a little more a day here.

  2. It’s about $2,000 less than we budgeted for Africa, so we were happy. We didn’t do some of the big ticket items—climbing Kili or doing a traditional Serengeti safari—so that saved some money. But we did rent a car and didn’t really rough it that much. I mean, even our tent had a nice big double air mattress that was more comfortable than half the beds we stayed in!

I think you’re right about Prague. I hear it’s become a good bit more expensive than when I was there in 2001.

  3. Man I wish we’d have traveled through Africa like you did. We did an organized tour through Absolute Africa and would never do it again. In 2 months we spent what you did in 3 months! Plus our guide was useless and the people on our truck only cared about where the bar was at the campsite. I guess we just weren’t built for ‘group travel’. I’ve loved reading about your experiences there! And next time – we’re doing it on our own (not sure what we were so afraid of!)
